What diltiazem is used for
Diltiazem cream is used to help heal anal fissures (small tears in the lining of the anus) by relaxing the muscles around the anus and improving blood flow to the area.
Your doctor may prescribe diltiazem cream for another reason—if so, follow their advice.
Before you take diltiazem
When you must not use it
- Do not use diltiazem cream if you are allergic to diltiazem or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
- Do not use if you are pregnant or breast-feeding unless your doctor recommends it.
Before you start to use it
Tell your pharmacist if you:
- have heart problems (such as low blood pressure or slow heart rate)
- have liver or kidney disease
- are taking any other medicines
Taking other medicines
Tell your pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, especially:
- blood pressure medicines
- medicines for heart conditions
- other creams or ointments applied to the anal area
These medicines may interact with diltiazem.
How to take diltiazem
How much to use
Follow the label or the instructions provided by your pharmacist.
A typical dose is a small pea-sized amount applied to the affected area twice daily, or as directed by your doctor.
How to apply
- Wash your hands before and after applying the cream.
- Apply a small amount (about the size of a pea) to the anal area, as directed.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or broken skin.
- Continue using the cream for as long as your doctor or pharmacist recommends, even if symptoms improve.
If you forget to use it
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue as normal. Do not use a double dose.
While you are taking diltiazem
- Do not stop using the cream without checking with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Tell any other health professionals you see that you are using diltiazem cream.

Most side effects are mild and short-lived.
Stop using diltiazem cream and seek medical advice if you experience severe or worrying symptoms.
Storage and disposal
- Store below 25 °C in a dry place, protected from light.
- Keep the tube tightly closed.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Return any unused medicine to your pharmacist for safe disposal.
