What omeprazole is used for

Omeprazole is used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
It is used to treat conditions such as:

  • gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • reflux oesophagitis
  • peptic ulcers
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
  • other conditions where reduction of stomach acid is needed Your doctor may prescribe omeprazole for another reason—if so, follow their advice.

Before you take omeprazole

When you must not take it

  • Do not take omeprazole if you are allergic to omeprazole or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breast-feeding unless your doctor recommends it.
  • Omeprazole is not recommended for children under 1 year unless specifically prescribed.

Before you start to take it

Tell your pharmacist if you:

  • have liver disease
  • have severe kidney disease
  • are taking any other medicines (see below)
  • are planning pregnancy

Taking other medicines

Tell your pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, especially:

  • warfarin or other anticoagulants
  • phenytoin
  • diazepam
  • digoxin
  • clarithromycin or other antibiotics
  • atazanavir or other HIV medicines
  • methotrexate
  • St John's Wort
    These medicines may interact with omeprazole.

How to take omeprazole

How much to take

Follow the label or the instructions provided by your pharmacist.
A typical dose is 0.7–3 mg/kg once daily, or as directed by your doctor.

How to take it

Oral Suspension: Shake the bottle well. Measure the dose using the supplied oral syringe. Omeprazole can taste bitter and can be mixed with a small amount of juice if required.

When to take it

Take omeprazole at least 30 minutes before a meal, preferably in the morning. Omeprazole can be taken at night if symptoms are worse at night.

How long to take it

Continue taking omeprazole for as long as your doctor or pharmacist tells you.
Do not stop taking it suddenly unless advised by your doctor.

If you forget a dose

If you forget to take omeprazole, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume as normal. Do not take a double dose.

If you take too much (overdose)

Immediately telephone your doctor, the Poisons Information Centre (☎ 13 11 26 in Australia), or go to Accident & Emergency if you think you or anyone else may have taken too much omeprazole. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort.

While you are taking omeprazole

Things you must do

  • Take omeprazole exactly as prescribed.
  • Tell any healthcare professional you start omeprazole treatment.

Things you must not do

  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
  • Do not stop taking omeprazole without consulting your doctor.

Things to be careful of

  • Omeprazole may mask symptoms of other diseases. Tell your doctor if your symptoms change or worsen.
  • Rarely, omeprazole may cause low magnesium levels—tell your doctor if you experience muscle cramps, weakness, or irregular heartbeat.

Flatulence Confusion, agitation
Constipation Low magnesium (muscle cramps, weakness)
Dizziness Visual disturbances
Cough Blood disorders

Most side effects are mild and short-lived.
Stop taking omeprazole and seek medical advice if you experience severe or worrying symptoms.

Storage and disposal

  • Store below 8 °C in a dry place, protected from light.
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Return any unused medicine to your pharmacist for safe disposal.

  • Oral Suspension: white to off-white liquid supplied in an amber glass bottle with child-resistant cap. Some flavours may colour the suspension differently.

Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: omeprazole 2–10 mg per mL.
  • Inactive ingredients: Flavour-Plus™, sodium bicarbonate, glycerin, sodium bicarbonate & flavour (optional).
