What palmitoylethanolamide is used for
PEA is a naturally occurring fatty acid amide that may help reduce pain and inflammation.
It is used as an adjunct treatment for chronic pain conditions, including neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, and pelvic pain.
Your doctor or pharmacist may prescribe PEA for another reason—if so, follow their advice.
Before you take palmitoylethanolamide
When you must not take it
- Do not take PEA if you are allergic to palmitoylethanolamide or any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet.
- PEA is not recommended for children under 18 years unless specifically prescribed.
Before you start to take it
Tell your pharmacist if you:
- have liver or kidney disease
- are planning pregnancy
Taking other medicines
PEA is generally considered safe with other medications. However, it is recommended that you tell your prescriber, or pharmacist about other medications you are taking.
How to take palmitoylethanolamide
How much to take
Follow the label or the instructions provided by your pharmacist.
A typical adult dose is 400mg to 1600mg daily in divided doses, or as directed by your doctor.
Initially it is recommended to take 800mg morning and night for 2-4 weeks and the reduce to 400mg morning and night for maintenance.
How to take it
Capsules: Swallow whole with a glass of water, with or without food.
When to take it
Take PEA at the same times each day, as prescribed.
How long to take it
Continue taking PEA for as long as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. If you have taken PEA continuously for more than 6 weeks without benefit you can stop taking it at any time.
If you forget a dose
If you forget to take PEA, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume as normal. Do not take a double dose.
If you take too much (overdose)
Immediately telephone your doctor, the Poisons Information Centre (☎ 13 11 26 in Australia), or go to Accident & Emergency if you think you or anyone else may have taken too much PEA. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort.
While you are taking palmitoylethanolamide
Things you must do
- Take PEA exactly as prescribed.
- Tell any healthcare professional you start PEA treatment.
Things you must not do
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Things to be careful of
- PEA is generally well tolerated, but always inform your doctor of any new or unusual symptoms.

Most side effects are mild and short-lived.
Stop taking PEA and seek medical advice if you experience severe or worrying symptoms.
Storage and disposal
- Store below 25 °C in a dry place, protected from light.
- Keep the bottle tightly closed.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Return any unused medicine to your pharmacist for safe disposal.
